Hawaii Kai ~ Waimanalo, Windward Oahu

Halona Blowhole - Halona Blowhole, the famed blowhole that is the photographer's dream, is located near the beach used to film the famous scene in From Here to Eternity. However: the beach is not recommended for swimming as the parking lots are a preying ground for amateur thieves. - Kalanianaole Hwy., 1 mile east of Hanauma bay.

Hanauma Bay - Famed for its incredible snorkeling, the bay features a volcanic crater home to dozens of fish species, multiple reefs, and a beautiful beach. - 7455 Kalanianaole Highway. Required Donation: $3. Parking: $1.00. Snorkeling equipment to rent.

Kahala - This classy neighborhood is home to the highest crust of Oahu society and is jammed with multi-million dollar homes. - Kahala Beach.

Makapuu Point - The views from Makapu are simply amazing: from the Point, you can see an underwater research center (closed to the public), a US marine base, and the picturesque Rabbit island just offshore. - Kalanianaole Highway, turnout near Makapuu Beach.

Queen Emma Summer Palace - Wonderful in its playful use of both European and Hawaiian architectural styles, this elegant palace served 19th century Queen Emma as a summer home to escape the heat of the capital. - 2913 Pali Highway. Admission: $5.

Sea Life Park - Though admittedly expensive, a trip to this park is well worth the price. It features, among others, dolphins, penguins, killer whales, and an absolutely amazing 300,000 gallon Hawaiian-reef habitat tank. - Kalanianaole Highway, Waimanalo. Admission: $25.

Ulupo Heiau - Found amid scenes of modern development, these stones are a sad reminder of the islands' old heritage. These stones, of mythical signifigance to the old Polynesians, were supposedly built by the menehune, a nocturnal race of leprachaun-like creatures. - Behind the YMCA at Kalanianaole Highway and Kailua Road.

Waimanalo - This beautifully picturesque sea-side resort town, features all of the variety and small-town quaintness you'd expect to find in a Jan Karon novel. - Seaside resort town. Kalanianaole Highway.
