West Maui Beaches

Kapalua Beaches :: Honokowai to Fleming Beach

From Honokowai to Fleming Beach, these are the beaches of Maui's West Shore around Kapalua. Read this "Star-Bulletin" article about beach safety in Hawaii.

Honokowai Beach Park

Honokowai/Kapalua vicinity, Maui, Hawaii. The beach at Honokowai is tiny, but the water is shallow and tame, making it suitable for young children. The swimming admittedly isn't much, but the snorkeling is decent, and a break in the coral reef at the north end of the beach allows access to other portions of the shoreline.

Location :: Honokowai, across the street from the Food Pantry.

Access :: Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

Services :: Picnic tables.

Pohaku Park

Honokowai/Kapalua vicinity, Maui, Hawaii. An utterly unremarkable beach that is used primarily by local families for picnics or by surfers as the beach here is relatively rocky and coral-ridden, and so, unsuitable for recreational swimming.

Location :: South of Kahana Beach, on Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

Access :: Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

Services :: None.

Kahana Beach

Honokowai/Kapalua vicinity, Maui, Hawaii. A small, protected beach, Kahana is frequented primarily by those seeking a good tan.

Location :: Near Kahana Beach resort, north of Pohaku Park, along Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

Access :: Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

Services :: None.

Napili Bay

Honokowai/Kapalua vicinity, Maui, Hawaii. One of the best beaches on the entire island, Napili Bay is far superior to the other beaches in the area. The beach here slopes gently down to a sandy bottom, while the sandy bottom later gives way to coral, making Napili a favorite destination for swimmers and snorkelers alike. Also, the wave action at Napili makes it a good place for beginning boogie borders.

Location :: Outside of the Napili Kai Beach Club, a few miles south of Kapalua.

Access :: Right of Ways lead to the beach from both Napili Place and Hui Drive.

Services :: None.

Kapalua Beach

Honokowai/Kapalua vicinity, Maui, Hawaii. A small pristine stretch of sand, that's very popular. Snorkeling is especially popular, as many species of fish call the beach's well-formed coral reef home.

Location :: Northern end of Napili Bay, off of Lower Honoapiilani Highway, Kapalua.

Access :: Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

Services :: Showers, restrooms.

D.T. Fleming Beach Park

Honokowai/Kapalua vicinity, Maui, Hawaii. One of the most popular beaches on the western end of the island, this mile-long crescent attracts droves of sunbathers, surfers, swimmers. Families come to picnic in the shadow of the wonderful shade trees.

Location :: Along Honoapiilani Highway, just past the Ritz Carlton.

Access :: Honoapiilani Highway.

Services :: Showers, restrooms, picnic facilities, grills.

Notes :: Do not swim here during the winter, when the surf is dangerous. Also, D.T. Fleming has become the unofficial beach of the Ritz Carlton. As such, the southern end of the beach has adopted something of the Ritz' exclusive air while all other portions of the beach retain their distinct, local flavor.
