Interesting fact about Upcountry Maui :: Haleakala's silversword plants look like greyish-green sea urchins. They only bloom once after growing for more than seven years, then they die. There's a small garden of them near the crater.
Remember :: Haleakala is 10,000 feet above sea level, where the air is thin and cold. If you have health concerns, ask your doctor, and phone the park to see if the summit is open before you leave the lowlands.
