Maui's whales

Maui's whale-watching excursions show humpbacks at play :: The humpback whale breeding ground off Maui's south coast is getting a lot of coverage this time of year. The big mainland papers covered it recently. Better hurry. After St. Patrick's Day the leviathans begin hightailing it for deeper waters around the world. They arrive for Christmas, peak in the first two months of the year, and by May have vanished. Here's a version of the story from the ...Seattle Times

Maui News also ran a good editorial about the treatment of whales around the islands....Whales were here first.

fyi:: Trees on Maui promising a bumper crop for summer. got mango?

What's the weather in Hawaii? Short answer: perfect. But if you want more details, just click and find out. ...weather

Real Hawaii

Getting closer to real Hawaii :: Kristin Jackson, a writer for the Seattle Times, has an interesting commentary on finding the real Hawaii. It isn't found with the prefect vacation package, and it's often found when time, place, and circumstance allow you to see what's always been in front of your eyes. ... real Hawaii

Straight from the heart in Kaaawa comes ilind, the kind of Hawaiian website that talks story long into the night. Great stuf here about real life on the windward side of Oahu. iLind.net. You might also get a kick out of a site witha different twist: Metroblogging Hawaii.

fyi :: How big is Hawaii's tourist economy growing? Airlines are expected to increase seat capacity by 13% in 2005, which is like two and a half million seats. That's a lot. Of those 13% aditional visitors, the largest share, 20%, is expected to go to Maui, followed by Kaui, Oahu, and the Big Island. (Hard to figure out those airline bankrupsy stories, unless they're just bargaining chips with unions, banks, and regulators.)
