The Koolau mountains separate Honolulu and the rest of Oahu from the quiet Windward side. This small 25-mile coastal strip runs along Highways 83 (Kamehameha Hwy) and 72 (Kalanianaole Hwy) from Hanauma Beach up to Kahuku, and is home to Oahu's best beaches. The southern Windward end has suburb beach communities, while the northern Windward area is decidedly more rural.

Take a quick drive through the Ko`olaus, and you're on the Windward Side, where you'll find Oahu's best beaches for swimming, easy surfing, and great windsurfing. The Windward Side runs 35 miles, north-south, on the east coast of Oahu, and the best beaches are on the more populated southern end near Honolulu.
