Villages of Hawi and Kapaau - These two small villages are good places to see what real Hawaii is, small, non-suburban, non-franchised. - Hawi and Kapaau, the Big Island, Hawaii.

Kamuela Museum - The Kamuela Museum displays many significant cultural and historical items, which include King Kamehameha sacred chair, tables, and weaponry. Call 808-885-4724 for information. - Kamuela, the Big Island, Hawaii.

King Kamehameha Statue - This was the original statue carved for the Iolani Palace in Honolulu, but on the way to Oahu the ship sank. The people in Honolulu had a second copy placed near the palace, and when the original statue was salvaged from the ocean, local people set it up in Kapaau, near Kamehameha's birthplace. - Kapaau, the Big Island, Hawaii.

Lapakahi State Historical Park - This former fishing village is now ah Hawaiian interpretive center. There are daily events and demonstrations to show you Hawaii's way of living. - on Highway 270, the Big Island, Hawaii.

Mookini Heiau - The Mookini heiau was an ancient Hawaiian temple that was used for human sacrifices. Today it is a National Historic Landmark, and is one of the most famous luakini heiau, though not as frequented as the others. - off Highway 270, the Big Island, Hawaii.

Parker Ranch Museum - Hawaii's Parker Ranch is known as the land of Hawaii's cowboys (paniolos), and it's the largest private ranch in the United States. There's a museum, wagon rides, historic homes, and it's a center for many events and festivities. - Highway 19, Kamuela, the Big Island, Hawaii.

Waimea Visitors Center - Stop here to get a personal view of the area. The Center has information, maps, brochures and exhibits, which feature local culture, and history. - Kawaihae Rd., Waimea, the Big Island, Hawaii.
